Tell Us Your Biggest Job Search Gripe

Tell Us Your Biggest Job Search GripeJob Search GripesTell Us Your Biggest Job Search GripeA job search can be frustrating, especially if youve been searching for months and coming up empty. And sometimes rightly or wrongly job seekers direct their frustration at employers over their hiring practices. But for every gripe from a job seeker, an employer has one as well about what they read and dont read on resumes and cover letters, and what they hear and dont hear in bewerberinterviews. The funny thing is that both sides have similar complaints about the other. For instance, look at these examplesJob Seeker ComplaintsEmployer ComplaintsEmployers leave us hanging after we submit our resumes or after were interviewed. Cant they just let us know if were still in the running?Job seekers can be pests by constantly following up on their applications. Dont they realize we have several candidates to evaluate? These things take timeHiring managers ask the dumbest or weirdest questions in an inte rview. Whats the point in asking whatanimal from the Amazon rain forest Id like to be?Job seekers dont prepare well for interviews. They ramble on and give us too much information on stuff thats not related to the job or their backgrounds.Employers can dance around salary ranges even though they want salary requirements from us. They seem more concerned with how much theyll have to pay me than whether Im the right person for the job.Job seekers dance around their weaknesses when we interview them. Weve heard more than our share of B.S. answers when we ask that question. Want to know how many of them say chocolate? That was only funny the first hundred times.Cant everyone just get along?Theres a well-known saying that you shouldnt judge another person unless youve walked a mile in their shoes. Thats why job seekers should anticipate what employers are looking for during the job search process, while employers should be equally empathetic about job seekers expectations.

3 Lessons I Learned When I Left My Comfort Zone - The Muse

3 Lessons I Learned When I Left My Comfort Zone - The Muse3 Lessons I Learned When I Left My Comfort Zone A few months ago, my company announced that itd be participating in a recreational softball league. At first, I welches content to ignore that news. While Id played baseball for a couple of years in high school, I wasnt very good. And more importantly, while I wasnt brand new at my job, I still wasnt the most recognized person at the company- so the whole proposition seemed incredibly scary. But, ultimately, I decided it was a good way to stay active after work and signed up. We wrapped up ur season this week, and two things came of it. First, we lost. A lot. Secondly, I learned a lot about the value of leaving your comfort zone at work- here are a few of those lessons. 1. Your Colleagues Want to Get to Know You, TooWhen I joined the softball team, I quickly realized I was the one of the only people in my department on the roster. And for a day or two, I completely regretted it. I can be outgoing when I want to be, but still need the support of someone I know to settle into new groups. So, the thought of playing a sport that Im not very good at, in front of a bunch of people I do not know, kept me up at night. But then, a funny thing happened I realized that even though we work in different departments and knew nothing about each other before joining this team, everyone was pretty open to getting to know me. Not only was this a huge relief, but it was also a good reminder that most people youll work with want to get along with their co-workers just as much as you do. So you really dont have much to lose by putting yourself out there. This doesnt just apply to company clubs and teams, but also to seeing unfamiliar faces in the kitchen or at a large meeting. Put yourself out there and say hi, (thats it), odds are high the other person will be happy you did it first. 2. You Will Not Lose Respect in the Office if You (Literally) Fall on Your FaceThose of you w ho follow me on Twitter might already know this, but in the second-to-last game of the season, I fell on my face as I tried to run to first base. My reward was a bruised hip and a painful case of turf-burn. But as I fell to the ground, I worried that my teammates (and remember, my esteemed colleagues) wouldnt let me live it down for as long as I worked for the company. And sure, they laughed. But they did so in a way that made me feel OK about the whole thing. One teammate said, Well, that just about sums up our season. Want a beer? Another came up to me and said, I did the saatkorn thing last week when you were out of town. Back in the office, a few of them asked how I was recovering, but otherwise, I never experienced any backlash or embarrassment about it. In fact, a few people commended me for giving it my all. So, while I left with a few scars, I did not lose any respect from the people I work with. Its a good reminder that youre allowed to fail in front of your co-workers. You re allowed to screw-up and embarass yourself without losing all your credibility (assuming its an honest mistake). The key is that you get right back up, admit to what happened- which wasnt hard in my case- and move forward. 3. Youll be More Resilient When Things Dont Go Your Way at WorkI cant emphasize this enough I am not very good at softball, at all. All of the clichs about how the ball doesnt always bounce your way apply to me. In fact, three weeks before I was scheduled to run a half-marathon, a hard ground ball hit me on the kneecap and caused me to fall to the ground in a crumped heap. One million different thoughts ran through my head. For starters, I was embarrassed. Then came a strong dose of inadequacy. And then came the fear that if I was actually hurt, I wouldnt be able to run the half marathon I had been training for. Fortunately, it was just a bruise and I was able to walk it off, but it did lead to an epiphany- I realized Id been feeling similar insecurity about a p roject I just couldnt figure out at th office. Embarrassment, inadequacy, fear that I might ultimately be told to go home and never come back. But the night before, I was able to pick myself up and finish the game, even after getting popped on the knee. And I realized that in an incredibly corny coincidence, the same should be true about that task I just couldnt figure out. Whats more, it occurred to me there was one common thread between the two situations I needed to suck up my pride, dust myself off, and ask for some help to finish the job. If you had told me three months ago that Id be comparing sports to my work, I would have told you to go home and never call me again. But here I am, doing just that, because there were a lot of valuable lessons learned from joining the softball team at work. Maybe softballs not your thing, and maybe your company doesnt even have a team. But, at the end of the day, theres a whole lot to gain from stepping out and leaving your comfort zone.Photo of courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.

What Kind of Things Do You Like to Do Outside of Work

What Kind of Things Do You Like to Do Outside of WorkWhat Kind of Things Do You Like to Do Outside of WorkWhat do you say whenan bewerberinterviewer asks what kind of things you like to do outside of work? This is a great opportunity for the employer to get some insight into who you are as a part. After all, you are interviewing for a position where you will be spending at least 40 hurs a week together. It makes sense that the interviewerwould want to know what kind of a person they would be working with. This question should not be difficult.Everyone has different hobbies and interests and sometimes, unique hobbies are the coolest onesJust because the interviewerdoesnt play the piano doesnt mean he or she doesnt greatly admirepianists.Dont be nervous, and dont lieLet them inside of the real, nonwork you, if even just for this one question.Mistakes to avoidWhen answering what kind of things you like to do outside of work you definitely dont want to be unprofessional. This doesnt mean that all of your hobbies have to be work-related.But they shouldnt be things that could have a negative impact on your work. For example, if a hobby of yours is that you like to go out on weekdays and party it up at the club, you probably shouldnt mention this since it could negatively impact your work the next morning. However, saying that you like to enjoy a beer after a long day of work or hang out with some friends is perfectly fine.Another mistake to avoid is being too vague. For example, dont just sayI love to travel, I like to invest money,I love to cook, and I like watching TV.Try to avoid simply listing. This doesnt tell the interviewer and you potential boss much.Give detailsMetally prepare before your interview.Ask yourself things likeWhere do you like to travel? What do you invest money in?What do you cook/favorite foods? What do you watch on TV?What do you like to do with your friends? If you are specific, you encourage conversation and show-off some of your social skills to the i nterviewer. This is what you want to doNow that you are getting close to your interview, make sure you dont forget the essentials.Check out Preparing For A Job Interview What To Bring, What To Wear, More.Sample answerWhen you respond, you want to be specific enough to encourage conversation. But you also dont want to be so specific that you get caught up in the excitement and ramble. So how do you give a response that is not too vague and not too specific?Heres an example of howto respond when the interviewer asks, What kind of things do you do outside of work? Thanks for asking I love playing the piano. 6 strategies for delivering your message with style

6 strategies for delivering your message with style6 strategies for delivering your message with styleBe honest, did you almost pass on reading this article because you thought this doesnt apply to me, Im notthatperson? Well, keep reading because delivering your message with style doesnt mean speaking with pizzazz or using gimmicks, it means making a point with confidence, command, elegance, and relevance. No doubt, you can be that personBefore we go any furtzu sich, lets deconstruct the du sagst ess message and style.Messageis a word with so many applications. So lets streamline this for the conference room. In other words, lets talk about what a message is when youre participating in a meeting or delivering a presentation. In these venues, a message is a key point. It conveys significance or value. A message captures or summarizes like a concluding statement does the importance of what youre sharing. And a message is one sentence, one repeatable, reinforce-able, retainable senten ce.Stylespeaks to memorability, or the impression you make. Frankly, it doesnt matter your age or stage of career, making a good impression matters every day (or as I like to say, executive presence never gets a day off). Style is that part of you whether its calm confidence, commanding presence, elegant fluency, or the ability to be relevant that sticks with audiences. Style is different for everyone, its a personal strength worth noting and nurturing.Given those definitions as a baseline, here are 6 strategies for delivering your message with style1. Be clear on your messageThis is actually the work of a good communicator being able to look at a bundle of information you need to share in a meeting or presentation and packaging it inside of a key point. If you need to be informative, then your message will sound a lot like a summary statement. If you need to be persuasive, then your message will convey benefit or value to your audience. By you doing the work to identify your mess age, it takes the work off of other people to figure out what youre conveying and leaves the impression that you are sharp, in control, and on point.2. PrioritizeKnow your facts but limit how many you deliver in support of your message. Its important to make the distinction between a message and information. Information merely supports, as evidence, a key point or message. Prioritize your facts and information, use them to back up a message, and then move on. TMI is a killer. People who try and share every fact and figure come off as either pedantic and arrogant or insecure and rambling. You want to come off as commanding and relevant.3. Set context and expectationsI know an executive coach who, when dealing with her clients interpersonal communication issues, often tells them to label the conversation. By this, she is suggesting that the speaker tell their audience whats coming, what kind of a conversation is about to begin. Will it be difficult, positive, challenging? Does a deci sion need to be made or does a robust discussion need to ensue? Do the same when youre about to deliver a message. It will sound something like this what Im about to share is something for us to consider as we go through this process or Im here to tell you about our ideas and capabilities and by the end, I hope to have earned your confidence.4. Take the high roadAlways. If and when you find yourself on the receiving end of criticism or disagreement, you must maintain composure and stay above the fray. Heres a protip for remaining gracious while experiencing conflict or confrontation There is always a common goal, something that both parties agree on. Thats your go-to point for disarming the conflict and taking the high road. State the shared goal, acknowledge that theres a difference of opinion, and stay positive and respectful while you deliver your message. Now thats style5. Look the partOkay, so heres where we talk aboutexecutive presence. Let me just say yes, people are looking at you and sizing you up. All the time. It just happens. Its a thing we humans do. It may not even be conscious or intentional. Your appearance sends a non-verbal message, so it matters also. Model yourself after someone you admire, use a style consultant, or ask a friend. Just be sure to look the part.6. Ignore the introvert/extrovert conundrumAnd finally, lets revisit what might have caused you to ttigkeitsunterbrechung before reading this article in the first place. You saw the words delivering your message with style and you thought, thats never going to be me, Im an introvert, not an extrovert. Well, of course its you. Author Susan Cain, in her bookQuiet, dispels themyths of introverts and reveals their valueespecially in the workplace. The styles of introverts and extroverts will naturally be different, but each has strengths they can use to make themselves and their points heard and remembered.Ultimately, an authentic representation of yourself whilst following a carefully th ought-out framework will improve your message and style tenfold. And each time you take the stage, the delivery will only get better and better.

When Work Feels Chaotic, Take Back Your Power With Learning

When Work Feels Chaotic, Take Back Your Power With Learning The modern workplace can give even the most laid-back person a case of sensory overload. At any given time, schmelzglass arrive, notifications flash, devices buzz, coworkers chit-chat, and meeting reminders pop up. Its no wonder 70 percent of respondents to the Udemy In Depth 2018 Workplace Distraction Reportsaid theyre distracted. The steady stream of distractions is making people stressed, unmotivated, and frustrated. No mere annoyance, workplace distractions undermine confidence and performance, especially among younger employees.Workplace distraction has real consequences for employers, too. In addition to lost productivity, lower engagement, and lower retention, distractions interfere with the next generations preparedness for future leadership roles.Twenty-two percent of millennials and Gen. Z workers dont feel theyre able to reach their potential, and 34 percent say they like their jobs less as a result of distractions. Many millennials are already in management, but they havent necessarily received training on what it takes to be a great manager i.e., soft skills like leadership, team-building, and giving constructive feedback. Our research found that 69 percent of millennials spend two hours or more looking at their phones for personal activities during the workday, which makes it that much harder for them to develop those critical leadership skills and stay tuned into their teams needs.Across all age groups, 59 percent of workers agree that personal use of technology is more distracting than work tools. Were all new to this balancing act, manically responding to pings, notifications, and interruptions while trying desperately to carve out time for deep, focused work. According to our research, 70 percent of workers think training could help them cope with distractions, but 66 percent have never spoken to a manager about it. It is possible, based on my experience , theyre afraid of looking like theyre having trouble doing their jobs or are less capable than their peers.Asking for learning and development opportunities should be viewed as a good thing a signal an employee wants to keep getting better at their job. At a time of continuous, disruptive workplace transformation, companies that attract and support avid upskillers will have a competitive edge. Besides, with a measurable gap between skills employees need and skills job candidates have, it makes a lot more sense to upskill the talent you already have than to get stuck in a costly cycle of constantly recruiting for new skills.Individuals can still grow and advance in their careers in uncertain times. Employers would be wise to support them along the way, lest those proactive upskillers take their talents to a different company, one that prioritizes learning and development.Never Stop LearningWhen people embrace lifelong learning, assimilating new skills isnt a source of fear or stress its just another part of the career journey. Tech workers have long been accustomed to continuous upskilling as programming languages evolve and new software versions launch, but that cycle is accelerating. Staying current in a particular language or framework isnt enough for techies, and a narrow focus wont be enough for workers in other disciplines either.Learning shouldnt be limited to those hard skills, though. Even as automation and artificial intelligence expand their impact, soft skills like communication, leadership, and team-building wont be easily replicated by machines. The good news, even if you werent a fan of traditional schooling, is that learning can now happen on your schedule and on your terms. For example, affordable options exist for on-demand online courses you can take at your own pace, whenever, wherever, and however you choose. Explore Outside Your FunctionI also suggest people get curious and stretch in different directions, and that employers empower the ir workers to do so. 3 Positive Steps for Managers to Curb Workplace Bullying

3 Positive Steps for Managers to Curb Workplace Bullying3 Positive Steps for Managers to Curb Workplace Bullying3 Positive Steps for Managers to Curb Workplace Bullying Namie, PhD, author of The Bully-Free Workplace Stop Jerks, Weasels Snakes from Killing Your Organization (Wiley, 2011).Back in 2007, many were surprised to learn that 37% of all adult Americans claimed to have been bullied at work. The scientific poll by the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI) used the definition repeated mistreatment by one or more employees that takes the form of eitherbei verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, humiliation, interference with work or some combination. Bosses were the main perpetrators (in 72% of incidents). Workplace bullying held steady at 35% according to the 2010 WBI survey.Employers have a dismal record of voluntarily dealing with bullying. Why? Bullying benefits executives. Or people dont know how to stop it. If the former is true, laws are needed to compel attention. Better to as sume knowledge and skill shortcomings. While waiting for executives to realize the benefits from adopting a comprehensive solution, there is much that can be done by managers and supervisors to tamp down bullying and dilute its destructive impact on employee and organizational health. Here are three simple action steps for managers that can be done today.1.) Hold confirmed bullies accountable. Drop the go work it out between yourselves ducking of your responsibility as manager. Get involved or the festering problem eventually will prevent any work from getting done.Your task is easier if there a clear statement about what conduct is, and is bedrngnis, acceptable in the company. If none exists, you can always create one in collaboration with the team that applies to those you supervise. If such a code does not exist, write a list of what you consider unacceptable. Use work-relevant impacts to justify each item. Share that list with everyone you supervise. If the alleged bully is your fa vorite, you will have trouble believing that she or he is capable of being mean. To solve the problem, you have to shelve favoritism. All your other employees are counting on you to do so.Before questioning the alleged bully, provide the complaining target with physical separation for safety, assuring that it is not punitive. Do it because retaliation follows questioning of the bully. Bullies will justify their conduct targets make them do it or they are perfectionists. Assess the relevance in terms of impact on the work teams ability to perform without fear. The rationale for your 11 interviews with employees is a checkup of the work climate, rather than an investigation. Getting information from terrified coworkers is nearly impossible. Many side with bullies for self-protection. Ask if they personally ever had negative encounters with the alleged bully. Ask how negative things can be hidden from you. Ask if they have seen personal changes, minor or major, in any coworkers.Should y ou be concerned? Believe the accuser until proven otherwise. Bullies lie. Humiliated targets are ashamed. With a mind untainted by favoritism, you will understand the competing versions of reality represented by the alleged bully and target. If the facts confirm that your line in the sand was crossed, make the bully apologize. Choose other appropriate consequences (HR can advise). Promise coworkers freedom from bullying in the future. Help restore the targeted workers health paid time off, counseling, support. Monitor the bullys conduct, imposing the threat of termination for non-compliance with the policy or your list. Practice in executing this step makes it easier. Paradoxically, it also becomes rarer.2.) Catch and correct peer bullies. If you stumble on a colleague berating a worker, you can intervene. The least risky method is to tug on the managers arm to remove her or him. Simply interrupt the incident. Then, deal with it behind closed doors for dignitys sake. It is more like ly that a worker supervised by your subordinate or by another supervisor seeks your help. Do not ignore the person who asked you for relief. When you have the manager alleged to be a bully alone, make the case for stopping the bullying behavior. Encourage change by citing impact on employee health, morale, productivity, trust and loyalty. If an anti-bullying policy exists, remind her or him of the hassle of a complaint and investigation. Good managers do not use tactics of intimidation, domination or humiliation. Become the anti-bullying advocate within the management team.3.) Your Management Style Could you be the bully? This is the hardest step of all. Ask your family. Do you feel constantly misunderstood and misperceived? Do you think your standards are high and wonder why others seem to not care as much as you? Is it impossible for you make your contributions subordinate to those of others?Indicators at work include being excluded from social events. At meetings, are your ideas ne ver met with dissenting views? Is the employee turnoverrate in units you supervise higher than elsewhere in the organization? Is absenteeism so high that production is subpar? Do you see decline in the pool of available talent so that no new hires seem acceptable?Look in the mirror. You are the problem. Turn to your staff to ask how you could change to eliminate the above problems. Follow their instructions.Author BioDr. Gary Namie is President of The Work Doctor, consulting specialists in workplace bullying. He is co-author of The Bully-Free Workplaceand directs the Workplace Bullying Institute.Make your company a bully-free zoneYour workplace should foster teamwork and innovation, which leaves absolutely no room for bullying. Civilian Careers in Criminology and Criminal Justice

Civilian Careers in Criminology and Criminal JusticeCivilian Careers in Criminology and Criminal JusticeMany people immediately think of law enforcement officers and assekuranzbrief detectives when they talk about careers in criminology and criminal justice. These are the most visible professions within criminal justice, but theyre not the only ones. You dont have to be a police officer to work in criminology. A host of jobs are available to those whose interests go far beyond law enforcement, from working with evidence to working with crime victims. Civilians vs. Sworn Officers- Whats the Difference? Sworn officers have the power to arrest individuals who are breaking or have broken the law. Theyre also authorized to carry weapons. Theyre literally sworn as the title suggests- theyve taken an oath to uphold the law. This doesnt detract from the contributions of those who work in civilian capacities. Their goal is to assist in upholding the law as well. Crime Analysts A crime analyst plays a vital role in assisting local, state, and federal law enforcement officers in the fight against crime. They gather intelligence and data, and they help officers in nearly every aspect of law enforcement, from planning patrols to identifying emerging trends and criminal activity. Crime analysts study police reports to help predict when, where, and what crimes will occur. They also provide crucial information in officer safety bulletins regarding dangerous people and trends, helping to make sure that more officers make it home safely at the end of their shifts. Forensic Science Careers Forensic scientists work in a variety of conditions and numerous specializations. They might work in a crime lab or as part of a crime scene investigative unit. Forensics technicians collect, preserve, and analyze evidence, then they present their findings to investigators to help them solve crimes. Some forensic technicians specialize in bloodstain pattern analysis. They look at th e spread and pattern of blood spatter at crime scenes to gather information about how a crime occurred, as well as insight into the type of person who might have committed it. Other technicians are experts in ballistics. They can obtain valuable information about the trajectories of projectiles, the caliber, and the type of bullets used in crimes. They can even help identify the type of gun used. Forensic anthropologists use their knowledge of human remains to develop information about the victims of crimes. They can help give investigators clues as to the types of injuries a victim sustained, the age of the victim, and even certain identifying characteristics such as height and weight- all based on little more than a few bones and skeletal remains. Forensic Psychology Forensic psychologists work in various components within the criminal justice system. Some work as jury consultants, helping attorneys analyze and select jurors for trials and prepare witnesses for the stand. Othe rs work in the corrections industry, helping to rehabilitate convicted criminals or evaluate accused criminals to determine whether theyre competent to stand trial. One very intriguing career in forensic psychology is that of the criminal profiler. These professionals work closely with investigators to provide information about the perpetrators of serious crimes, giving detectives leads based on personality type that can even help identify the age and race of a criminal when they have little else to go on. Criminologists Criminology is the study of crime and its causes, costs, and consequences. The job of a criminologist is to do just that study crime. Criminologists teach in universities, work for think tanks, and assist policymakers in creating public policy regarding crime and the appropriate response to crime. Forensic Computer Investigators Computer investigators use their knowledge of technology and their computer skills to assist investigators in collecting electronic evidence and tracking cybercriminals. They can be called upon to dig deep into a hard drive to recover lost or erased data, or they might work for cybersecurity firms, helping to create and test measures that protect systems from hackers. Loss Prevention Specialists Loss prevention specialists work for retail stores. Their primary function is to mitigate or eliminate the theft of merchandise by both customers and employees. People who work in loss prevention often hold degrees in criminology and criminal justice, and they use the job as a stepping stone toward careers in law enforcement or security. Many, however, go on to successful careers preventing theft for major corporations. Child Protective Services These workers do their own type of investigation, often with the assistance of other authorities. Its their job to look into allegations of child neglect or abuse. These allegations can be received from a variety of sources family members, neighbors, friends, or adults w ho have a duty to report their suspicions by law, such as teachers and medical personnel. Sports Security and Investigations Theres even a place for criminology in major sports. The National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the NCAA all make use of security professionals to maintain the integrity of the sport. These professionals protect players from others and from themselves, and they look into allegations such as cheating, rules violations, and steroid use. Police Dispatcher Law enforcement officers need tons of support to perform their jobs well. Police dispatchers provide that support by taking calls for service, recording and providing case numbers, and sending units to incidents that require police intervention. Dispatchers are an indispensable component of any law enforcement agency, and this can be a wonderful career opportunity for those who want to work in law enforcement without having to serve as police officers. Victim Advocates Victim advocates aid and assists the victims of crimes. They might arrange for medical services in the immediate aftermath of a crime, then later walk victims through the judicial process and help with any questions or needs the victim might face. Many advocates are employed by state courts or state services, but others work for police departments. Private Investigators OK, maybe you do want to carry a gun. Private investigators must typically be licensed by the state in which they operate, and they must have permits to carry firearms if theyre going to do so. The primary job of this type of career is to collect evidence, both physical evidence and through witness testimony, that can then be turned over to the authorities. But private investigators arent limited to issues of crimes. They might investigate domestic situations, potential employees, or missing persons. They can work independently, through an agency, or even for private corporations or law firms. There Are Plenty of Careers Avail able These are just a few of the many careers available to those who are interested in civilian employment in criminology and criminal justice. The options are nearly limitless, and youre sure to find a job that will meet all your needs with the right preparation and education.

A Kids Kitchen

A Kids Kitchen A Kids Kitchen A Kid's Kitchen For 25 years, University of Tulsa engineering students have used their talents to address the special needs of Oklahoma residents with physical and developmental disabilities. The program is called Make a Difference EngineeringMADE at TUand students from all departments in the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences are invited to participate. This year, seven seniors designed and built a small portable kitchen as an educational tool for developmentally challenged children. The kitchen allows children to participate in food preparation ranging from mixing and chopping to slicing and dicing. Christopher Butler, Sam Carr, Mohamed Ghori, David Gogolakis, Salman Hassan Al-Ali, Joe Meier, and Khristen Thornburg worked directly with staff from the Little Light House, a tuition-free Christian center for preschool-age children with special needs. Molly Smith, the Little Light Houses director of development, said, The goal of the center is to provide hope for families of children with special needs and improve their quality of life. John Henshaw, chair of the universitys Department of Mechanical Engineering, is the MADE at TU advisor. TUs goals are broadto use the engineering talents of students to make life better for people with disabilities, Henshaw said. This program not only helps the students develop comprehensive technical skills, but it also helps them gain the experience of client interaction. The project features cooking tools that children can control with supervision. According to David Gogolakis, the team leader on the kitchen project, The Little Light House pitched the project to us as a potential customer for our senior project and collectively, seven of us put about 1,400 hours in on creating the Mobile Cooking Center. The modified kitchen is designed to be safe and friendly for the children, who will use it under supervision of a therapist or aide. The cooking center is a completely functional mini kitchen with upper and lower cabinets for storage, two fold-down tables for counter space, an induction stovetop where the surface area around the pan doesnt get hot, a cutting board, mixer, a mechanical arm to help pour ingredients into bowls, and a slicer and dicer. The kitchen has options to accommodate different children, many of whom have mobility and sensory challenges. The TU students purchased a Ninja slicer and dicer and then built stands for it, so it can be operated by remote control. After the therapists plug the machine into a specific outlet, the children can push a button, allowing them to watch the process in action. The kitchen has plastic knives that are safe for the kids to use with assistance. Therapists can attach different spoons or measuring cups to the pouring arm, which functions similar to a desk lamp. The arm can be repositioned to pour ingredients into a second bowl. The design team helped the children make pancakes in the mobile kitchen the day it was delivered. According to Meier, a remote control device was used to operate the mixer to mix pancake batter. All of the kitchens components can be operated both manually and by remote control. The mechanical engineering students have listened to our needs of making all their projects accessible to all of our children, said Dede Flately, physical therapist at the Little Light House. They have provided projects that help the children with different aspects of their development by providing a fun activity that will not seem to be work to them. For Further Discussion The goal of the center is to provide hope for families of children with special needs and improve their quality of life.Molly Smith, the Little Light House

Stages You Go Through When Your Co-Worker Quits - The Muse

Stages You Go Through When Your Co-Worker Quits - The Muse Stages You Go Through When Your Co-Worker Quits So you just heard the news: Your colleague’s leaving. Even if you were expecting this announcement, it’s easy to get caught up in a roller coaster of emotions during this time. After all, not only could your workload and responsibilities be changing, but you could be losing someone very close to you. In fact, you could even be wondering how you’ll get through a workday without this person by your side. (The person you talk about so much on the weekends that your friends get jealous.) Such changes aren’t ever easy, no matter how many times they happen. But take it from someone who just lost her own close work buddy- you can power through this rough patch and come out refreshed and ready to take on new challenges. Hey, it might even work out in your favor. But, before you get to the light at the end of the tunnel, you have to get through the tunnel. Here’s what to expect: Stage 1: Reflection Unless you were privy to your colleague’s secret plans, chances are you were caught off-guard by her sudden announcement. You might be asking yourself, “Is this really happening?” After all, this person has been part of your daily life for a long time. Remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel this initial shock and to get a little emotional. But also remember that you’re not the only one who needs to digest this news. Everyone who works with this person is going through the same thing you are right now- especially your boss. And, your co-worker may be feeling a bit bittersweet as well; don’t make her second guess her decision by making this about you. Daily business operations still need to go on, so remember to stay professional and not let yourself spend the the next few days moping. Stage 2: Genuine Enthusiasm Once you get over your initial shock, you’ll kick into friend mode. You’re genuinely happy for your colleague- he’s worked so hard and deserves this new opportunity! You may find yourself organizing some extra lunches or happy hours, or maybe you’ll take up a collection for a farewell gift. Regardless of how you celebrate, you’ll be overcome with the feeling that you need to celebrate this person’s contributions- your monthly budget be damned. Stage 3: Stress Sure, you’re happy for your colleague, but as soon as the reality sets in (and the two-week notice period dwindles down), panic and stress will probably start to set in. In my case, there were so many things that my colleague knew that I didn’t; after all, he’d been with the company for 15 years compared to my two. How was I going to absorb all his tribal knowledge? Being in IT, a lot of people depended on my expertise- how would I ever going to answer all their questions? My time to get any and all of this answered was closing in, and I had to act fast. Which led me to… Stage 4: Motivation and Action Faced with all those open questions, worry, and stress, I knew there was only way to help alleviate it: Take action. My lack of time (again, only two weeks!) was a very strong motivator. I immediately jumped into learning and organizing mode. I diligently scheduled knowledge transfer meetings and set specific objectives for each one. I sat and wrote down all those little nagging questions I’ve always wondered about, and I made sure I got answers to as many as possible. If you’re close, you can go ahead and throw in a few honest ones, too (e.g., Why are you really leaving?). I knew I was never going to learn enough to cover every possible situation, but I sure felt better knowing I had asked the tough questions and then documented the responses. Stage 5: Contentment When your colleague’s last day arrives, you’ll likely still have some mixed emotions; it’s never easy saying goodbye to someone close to you. But since you turned your fears into action and came up with a plan, you should be feeling pretty good. You made it through this hectic time, and you’re back to feeling happy for the person leaving. Sure, this may mean some extra hours and stress for a while, but it also means you have the chance for new responsibilities. And new responsibilities mean new opportunities for you. When I reflect back on the last six months, I see a lot of logged hours. But I also see that those hours were filled with valuable learning opportunities. If my colleague hadn’t left, perhaps my knowledge wouldn’t have grown quite as much. As it turned out, I surprised myself by learning, doing, and leading much more than I had in the past- and that is true workplace contentment. Plus, now when I grab drinks with my former co-worker, we’re not just rehashing the day, but instead actually talking about things that occur outside the office walls. Dog Daycare Startup Tips and Suggestions

Dog Daycare Startup Tips and Suggestions Dog Daycare Startup Tips and Suggestions Dog daycare services are very much in demand for a variety of reasons. For one, most couples work and more single people than ever now have pets. Overall, people lead very busy, hectic lives that take them away from home for long periods of time. And as people increasingly consider their pets their children, they often don’t want to leave their companion animals alone for several hours a day. It has created a growing demand for dog daycare services. Plus, this can be a really fun business because you get to hang out and play with doggies all day! Here are some tips for successfully starting such a business. Dog Daycare Business Checklist It is always a good idea to research the kinds of related services and facilities available in the community in which you want to launch your business. Not only will this give you an idea of what it will take to succeed, but you might also consider offering services that others do not, to get a paw up on the competition. Otherwise, the first thing anyone starting any kind of business must do is to come up with a business plan. Determinations Location (your home, or an outside facility that you may rent or purchase)Startup costs, and how you may obtain these funds (a loan, investors, etc.)Mission statement outlining your business purpose and goalsRates you will charge (which is usually based on half-day or full-day services)Marketing and advertising strategiesHours of operationSpecific services you will provideSupplies (cleaning products, toys, treats, etc.)Hiring needs (if any)InsuranceLicensing requirements You will also need to consult with a business attorney. Also, it is suggested that you utilize a business plan template, which you can find on the internet, or enlist the services of a professional business plan writer, which is money well spent and will help put you on the right track. Be sure to pay particular attention to any licensing requirements or zoning regulations within the community in which you plan to launch a dog daycare operation to determine if there are any restrictions. Of course, you will also want to come up with a memorable business name and logo. Important Safety Tips As you will be dealing with living beings that are essentially perpetual kids, always expect the unexpected, and prepare accordingly. You absolutely should establish a relationship with a veterinarian or pet medical facility that you may rely on in the event of a doggie medical emergency, and also acquire pooch first aid and CPR training. The American Red Cross offers pet first aid classes in various locations throughout the U.S. Plus, you should have a well-stocked pet first aid kit on hand. Once again, the American Red Cross comes to the rescue with this handy  list of the types of supplies you should have. And make sure that the environment in which you will operate your dog daycare enterprise is thoroughly doggie proof via the absence of any dangerous or potentially poisonous plants and other objects. Determining the Kinds of Doggie Clients You Will Accept Depending on ones level of experience with dogs, those who are new to operating a dog daycare business may want to consider dog size restrictions, especially if you opt to operate your business in your home. You should also ask the pets parents lots of questions about any health or behavioral issues potential pooch clients may have. And always inquire about any possible dietary restrictions and the kinds of treats a dog’s owner may or may not want their pets to have. Resources A great resource is Paws Dog Daycare, a website with loads of helpful, detailed info for those in or considering careers in this field. Another resource is the trade magazine Pet Boarding Daycare, published by Barkleigh Productions, of Groomer to Groomer trade magazine and pet grooming show fame. Barkleigh also hosts an annual Pet Boarding Daycare Expo; the inaugural event took place in November 2012 in Baltimore. With proper planning and resources, a dog daycare business can be a very rewarding, lucrative, and doggone fun enterprise.

Body Fat Measurement System In The Military

Body Fat Measurement System In The Military Body Fat Measurement System In The Military According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than one-third of all adults in the United States suffer from obesity, and over half are now considered overweight and bordering on obesity. If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obese range. Body Mass Index is defined as body weight in kilograms divided by the height in meters squared. (BMI BW / H* squared).  However, the Military Tape Test is a circumference measurement around the waist (belly button) and the neck and placed into an algorithm chart to produce a percentage of body fat.  An online calculator can be found at this US Navy Body Fat Calculator. Since the military is a product of today’s society, the military needs to take offensive measures. Already the military overweight and borderline overfat rates have increased in the past 25 years along with societies. The military has strict physical fitness standards and body fat standards.  Currently, about 8%  of the military is considered overweight/overbody fat percentage.  If not, it would only be a matter of time before the military shares the effects of obesity and associated illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer that the civilian society is now plagued with. The Defense Department Laid Down the Law Concerning Body Fat “All the DoD Components shall measure body fat using only the circumference-based method,” read the regs. “This method has been carefully evaluated for applicability to Service members and represents the best approach, which can be applied by Service members with minimal error (plus or minus 1 percent). This method is valid because of the emphasis on abdominal circumference, the site of human body fat deposition that is most strongly associated with health risks, and which corresponds to other military goals including appropriate appearance and healthy exercise habits.” Current military body mass policy requires service members to maintain body fat levels below 28 percent for men and 36 percent for women. If they fail the height/weight standards, they must undergo a tape test to estimate their body fat percentage. Consequences of Exceeding Standards The consequences of exceeding body fat standards within the services are severe. In the Army, soldiers listed as overweight may not: Re-enlistAre not eligible for promotion.Aren’t allowed to attend professional military schools. Are often are barred from leadership positions.Understanding the Tape Test All of the services use a simple tape test to make the call on who is too fat but used when a member is exceeding the height and weight standards. The Army, Navy and Marine Corps use a basic height-weight body mass index tool as an initial assessment, and then those who exceed weight limits get taped. Men are measured at the neck and waist; women: neck, waist, and hips. For both, the neck measurement is subtracted from the other measurements in an equation designed to determine their “circumference value.” Those results are then compared against height measurements using Pentagon-generated charts to determine the body fat percentage. Is The Tape Test Accurate? While the tape test is cheap and easy to administer, many complain that it’s not accurate. The tape test accounts for the size of an individual but does not take into consideration muscle. There have been occurrences recorded of a soldier having maxed out the PT test and failed the tape test. The Most Accurate Method When they questioned the results, and after had Hydrostatic testing, it was determined that their body fat was well within acceptable limits. Hydrostatic Testing Underwater weighing is the most cumbersome method of body fat testing, but its also the most accurate. You sit on a scale in a tank of warm water, and then you blow all the air out of your lungs and bend forward until youre completely submerged. You stay submerged for a few seconds while your underwater weight registers on a high precision scale. The result is then plugged into a mathematical equation. This test is repeated, and the best results are averaged to get a very accurate reading of the amount of fat in your body. Is the Fair? Troops have complained the tape test is unfair, saying it is an inaccurate gauge of fitness with too large an impact on their careers. They feel that the tape test is only administered to ensure that individuals have a proper military appearance and function of their duties or is being given as a punitive measure. The statement by the DoD, “which corresponds to other military goals including appropriate appearance and healthy exercise habits” certainly gives credence to this belief.

4 Surprising Big Brands That Started With Nothing

4 Surprising Big Brands That Started With Nothing 4 Surprising Big Brands That Started With Nothing As we all sit down to the familiar Thanksgiving table this year, it’s a good opportunity to reflect on our values as Americans and consider how much we’ve benefited from the spirit of American ingenuity. Since our country was founded, we’ve grown, changed and discovered amazing things. And along the way, American businesses have prospered and grown, as well. Our history is a shared history of businesses and entrepreneurs that combined good ideas with hard work to create legacies that last through the years. This year, let’s celebrate Thanksgiving by reflecting on four surprising big brands with very small roots: Dick’s Sporting Goods, Hertz Automotive, Whole Foods Market and Mattel. Dick’s Sporting Goods In 1948, 18-year-old Richard Stack took a risk. He quit his job as a retail clerk at an Army surplus store to open a small fishing supply store with $300 from his grandma’s cookie jar. Over the years, Stack expanded his merchandise to include sporting equipment, eventually branding his company as Dick’s Sporting Goods. The company remains in the family to this day, after Richard passed on the leadership to his son Ed. Search  Dick’s Sporting Goods jobs Hertz Automotive At the age of 22, Hertz Automotive founder Walter Jacobs started a car rental company with 12 Model-Ts and a small automotive shop in Chicago, Illinois. As consumer vehicles became more popular throughout the 1920s, Jacobs partnered with John D. Hertz to expand the company and continue their dedicated focus on helping customers rent automobiles. Together, they built a powerful brand that brought in $1 million annual revenue by 1925. Want to work at Hertz Automotive jobs Whole Foods Market Whole Foods Market caters to selective shoppers now, but its roots are decidedly rags-to-riches. At 25, college dropout John Mackey and 21-year-old Rene Lawson Hardy borrowed money from family and friends to open a small food store in Austin, Texas, called “Saferway” (not to be confused with Safeway, founded in Idaho in 1915).
